Considering the options to mitigate CO2 emissions in cement manufacturing, it is becoming increasingly evident that the sector will rely on new, emerging solutions to reach climate neutrality, of which carbon capture is expected to have a pivotal role. Addressing challenges related to technological maturity, energy consumption and operational costs is essential to implementing carbon capture at industrial scale globally. At the same time, developing realistic routes to utilize captured CO2 will further facilitate implementation, leading to lower emissions, as well as the creation of new value chains. The demonstration case of circular-economy approach envisioned within the the EU H2020 RECO2DE project includes converting CO2 captured from clinker manufacturing into materials and products that can be used for cement production. The demonstration activity will take place at TITAN Kamari cement plant near Athens, Greece in the second half of 2021, with the participation of 13 EU partners.
